Start with a landing plan, not a perfect life
Moving abroad can feel exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Before you arrive, write down the essentials: somewhere to stay, how you will reach work, and who you can contact if plans change. Keep copies of your employment offer and important documents somewhere secure. You do not need to organise your entire new life in one weekend.
Ask your employer which relocation support is actually included. Temporary accommodation, travel assistance and help with local paperwork are different benefits. Request the details in writing, including any repayment conditions if you leave the role.
Make your budget personal
Instead of relying on somebody else’s monthly total, build your own list: rent, utilities, transport, groceries and a small cushion for unexpected costs. Check current listings and verify a property and its terms before paying a deposit. Compare the commute as carefully as the photos. A lovely room can feel less lovely when getting to work becomes exhausting.
Let small rituals do the heavy lifting
Choose one familiar ritual for your first week: a morning walk, calling a friend, or making your favourite breakfast. Then add one local habit, such as visiting the same café or practising a few Portuguese phrases. Speaking Dutch at work does not mean you have to stay inside a Dutch-speaking bubble outside it.
Find your people at your own pace
Try a hobby group, a language exchange or a low-pressure coffee with a colleague. You are allowed to feel homesick and still be glad you moved. For residency, tax and healthcare questions, consult the relevant official authorities: the right steps depend on your nationality and circumstances. Take one useful step at a time, and give yourself permission to settle in.
